Our guide to the ski season

The winter ski season is just starting to get underway, and whilst the winter sports pros amongst us will be ready and prepared to hit the slopes over the coming months, we’ve put together a brief guide to the winter ski season for the newbies amongst us.

When does it run?

The ski season is classed as the period of the year when ski lifts are running, and lift passes are available. It typically runs from late Autumn to mid spring dependant on the resort.

Where are the best countries to visit?

The great thing about the ski season is that there are so many fantastic resorts that you can visit across in a range of different countries, so to get you started here are a few recommendations to get you started.

If staying in a picturesque resort with a warmly welcoming atmosphere is a high priority, Austria will generally come up as the winner.

From Alpbach for the beginners amongst us to St Anton am Arlberg for the experts, Austria has something for everyone

More Brit skiers and snowboarders choose to head to France than anywhere else because the French Alps offer the best variety of resorts compared to any country in the world.

Destinations range from the high altitude and purpose built, with massive and varied ski areas attached, to lesser-known farming villages with that traditional French feel.

Switzerland is in some ways hard to beat. It has an incredible share of the most dramatic mountain scenery, and wonderful traffic-free old mountain villages, the best mountain restaurants, and some of the most impressive ski runs.

What if I can’t ski?

For those of us who can’t ski there is good news, there are plenty of places locally to learn including Sandown Sports in Esher and at Guildford Ski Slope, meaning there’s nothing to stop you from being able to go on that once in a lifetime ski trip.
