As the nights draw in and the Surrey countryside turns to gold, this is one of the best times of year to explore the county on your doorstep.
From ancient woodland to gardens bursting with colour, here are seven spots that we recommend you visit, with the help of our service:
The Surrey Hills at their most dramatic
Box Hill remains the county’s best-loved viewpoint, its scarp slopes turning amber and rust as the beech and yew woodland changes colour.
A short drive south, Leith Hill climbs higher still. As the highest point in the south east of England, its tower offers views that stretch to the London skyline and, on a clear day, the coast beyond.
Gardens bursting with colour
RHS Garden Wisley is arguably at its best in autumn, when the maples and liquidambars in Oakwood turn to fire and the borders on Seven Acres fill with grasses and late-flowering Asters.
A short drive south west, Winkworth Arboretum is the National Trust’s only arboretum and it shows.
The hillside above the lake is planted almost entirely for autumn colour, with acers and liquidambars turning the whole valley into a patchwork of crimson and gold.
A taste of the harvest
Autumn is harvest season in the Surrey Hills, home to a cluster of award-winning vineyards making the most of the county’s chalky soils.
Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking is the largest single vineyard in England and its restaurant and tasting rooms make a fine base for an autumn afternoon among the vines.
Ancient woodland worth the walk
Polesden Lacey, near Great Bookham, sits within 1,400 acres of parkland and ancient woodland and its long views from the South Lawn are especially striking once the trees begin to turn.
For something a little wilder, Newlands Corner offers open access to the North Downs with sweeping views over the Weald, along with plenty of quiet trails away from the crowds.
Make the journey part of the day
Surrey’s best autumn spots are often down winding lanes and narrow car parks, which is exactly where we can help.
