Our Gingerbread Apple Crumble – Perfect for Christmas!

Here’s a creative twist on a classic – Gingerbread Apple Crumble.

This dessert combines the traditional comfort of apple crumble with the festive flavours of gingerbread, making it an irresistible treat for a cosy Christmas evening.

Ingredients

  • For the filling:
  • 4 large cooking apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • Zest and juice of half an orange
  • For the gingerbread crumble topping:
  • 100g plain flour
  • 50g rolled oats
  • 75g dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 75g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 4 gingerbread biscuits, roughly crushed
  • A handful of chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling
  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/gas mark 4).
  • In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples with the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, ground ginger, orange zest, and juice. Toss until the apples are well coated, then spread evenly in a greased baking dish.
  1. Make the gingerbread crumble topping
  • In a separate bowl, mix the plain flour, rolled oats, dark brown sugar, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
  • Add the cold, cubed butter and rub it into the dry ingredients with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  • Stir in the crushed gingerbread biscuits and nuts, if using, for added texture and festive flavour.
  1. Assemble and bake
  • Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples, making sure to cover them fully.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  1. Serve
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of brandy cream for an extra festive touch.

Top tip: For added spice, grate a little fresh ginger into the apple mixture for a more intense ginger flavour.
